Love Letter to Patient Kique

This letter was written in Spanish originally. You can find the Spanish version below.

My dear, patient, Kique,

You’ve turned 42 and you look so well! I’m very happy that you returned to the Buddhist path two years ago. You’ve realized what transformation it has brought for you and those around you. This path brings joy and happiness, and—what is most important for you—peace and calm. I encourage you to continue on the path. You will see that you will continue to transform more and more, until, one day, total liberation.

You tell me that you have failed a number of times, that you have lost the way and that you  gave yourself over to escapist consumerism. That may be so, but I invite you to observe the  following: if continuous practice and determination had not been planted deep in your  heart, you would not have noticed this and returned to the path, to your true home, to your  breath. Don’t be so hard on yourself, demanding and perfectionist. Embrace your humanity  with all its contradictions, simply observe them, and let them go. In the end you will laugh  out loud at yourself. Be more compassionate towards yourself. Always remember the story  that Ajahn Brahm told about the wall of one hundred bricks: observe the entire wall and not  the two misplaced bricks. 98 bricks are well-placed! Perfection and your aspiration can at  times become sources of stress. Often they hide the wish to have control or power. Your  brother, whose addictions you tried to help transform, told you this once and it annoyed  you. It made you angry that he would say something true about you. Perfection is things as  they already are. As your good friend Pedro Angel says: perfectly imperfect.

So, relax—even more so now that you have decided to be celibate. Don’t make this vow of  celibacy into an inviolable regulation, but rather see it as a guide. The most important thing  is that you cultivate and practice mindfulness—even in the moments when you “break”  your vow—, always looking at yourself with compassion from a place of love. If you  maintain mindfulness and look deeply at what is going on you will always learn something  that will make you more free and happy. Change the peg: in place of thinking that you will  be observing a vow of celibacy, see instead that you are observing deeply your desires so as  to understand them and not to continue to be subjected to them. This understanding can  help others. I wish for you to have compassion towards yourself—the same patience that  you offer to others—, much understanding, tranquility and peace.

I suggest for you the following aspirations for the year 2021:

1) That you go on a one-day mindfulness retreat every three months

2) That you eat in mindfulness—even when you are with others.

3) That you generate a feeling of gratitude each time you bathe, drink or touch water. I love you in every present moment, and I embrace you now and whenever you need it.

Kique Cubero Garcia

Querido paciente Kique:

¡Has llegado ya a 42 años y te ves súper!

Me dices que has fallado varias veces, que te has desviado y te has entregado a un consumismo escapista.
